I've been teaching for 2 yrs, and I've enjoyed going back over the basics. It's so important not to forget, and you have outlined them in a very easy way. Thanks for the info, and energizing my practice along with refreshing my teaching skills.

Thank you Jan, I try to follow my own advice and chunk the information well, so what has taken years for us to learn becomes easier for all to understand (at least on a logical level!) :)

Hi again,
A complaint I had in class that was being directed was the lack of instruction of the bow pose (a few others, too). I did it correctly because I had been taught in a previous class. I noticed that several people weren't doing it correctly because the teacher was in such a hurry to get to the next pose. she didn't give enough detail so the students were "falling out" before they could even do it in the first place. I think people forget the purpose of yoga. I'm glad you are giving instruction on short cuts (less words) but also how important it is to move/flow from one movement to another with correct breathing. THAT is so important to me. NOT to move so fast that people don't have time to do the pose precisely! Thanks again for such good instruction. I hope to show this instruction video to the young teacher. I was trying to figure out a way to say these things, now I have a way of doing just that and not be the critical person, but "sharing" person.

Hi Gabrielle, This is Rowena, I have watched both videos and really learned some good tips. I was pleased to see that some are the ones I already use. As you know, I have two student teachers interning with the help of your Master Class. These videos will be a big part of their training. Thank you for all that you do to make this yoga a safe and positive experience. The work you have done to share your knowledge has help me become the teacher I want to be. Thank you, Thank you! Rowena

GREAT RESOURCE! I'm so happy you covered the poses in those 5 steps. Specifically, the set up and the 'where you should feel the stretch' components are big issues for "my" students. They are used to just diving into the poses, so a lot of the regulars ignore me when I describe the set ups. I'll have to keep at it, even more concisely . Thanks for making these video's and letting us download them, Gabrielle! They are staying with me for a long time. Ashley :)

Another great video. I agree that precision and accuracy in the five step process is so important to leading people through the postures safely while allowing students to experience their personal maximum expression of the postures. And ALWAYS form over depth!! The ability to cut and paste dialogue and instructions to customize the class to one's students helps create rhythm and flow and cut down on clutter. I also agree with the positive phrases...students generally respond much better to a positive phrase and being told 'better' or 'yes' when they make the correction than being told 'don't do that' or 'no'. Learning to read individual students bodies is certainly an integral part of becoming a stellar teacher but it does take time and in my opinion requires a little extracurricular work to expand one's knowledge about anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology at a level deeper than teacher training goes in order to truly appreciate and understand the mechanics of muscle movement work, how bodies are put together, where things get out of balance, and how the body compensates. I know that is far beyond the scope of these videos but I felt it important to point out. Gabrielle, thanks again for taking the time to get back to the basics. These videos will definitely be helpful to new teachers and are a great refresher for experienced teachers as well. :) Jennifer

This helped me understand how to break down the individual pose.
I think it would have been clearer if you had just used one pose as your example for how to break it down. Mentioning the other poses like Half Moon made me switch in my head to that pose instead of staying with Standing Bow and following what you said all the way.
Thanks again for taking the time to do this and offering it online.

Thanks for the feedback, Helen

I guess that really reinforces the fact that repetition is a necessary element of the learning process! Mostly we need more than one 'pass' to 'get' something and translate that learning to a useful behavior. I am happy you found it useful!

Hi Gabrielle!
This is a great video, thank you for all your efforts. The pose set up is a great way to look from the teaching side, so far I have only been a student, hope to be a teacher some time soon. The part on learning the positive phrases gives me a different/new perspective too, when I think back, yes, too many negative phrases in our lives in general, will apply more in my parenting as well, thank you, thank you, Spela

Ah yes! If that one little thing can help you with your children it could have the greatest impact - ever! ;) . And ... you're welcome!

Great video with lots of information! Question -- why do always refer to this as "hot yoga" rather than "Bikram"? Seems pretty Bikram-y to me, plz explain. Thanks!

Reply

Gabrielle August 28, 2010 at 3:23 am

Hi Stacey

It's simple really. Bikram Yoga is a trademark that is owned by Bikram Choudhury (that is the logo and a name). It's really about respecting the legalities of his trademark that I call it hot yoga. Hot yoga is after all, simply yoga in a hot room. I do bring something to people who would like to get even more out their practice.

Thanks for asking!

Thank u again Gabrielle, amazing I was wondering how will I memorize the 5 steps and when u chunked them up into 1,2,5 and said apply 3 and 4 into 1,2,3 i thought wow that was easy.
The example of standing bow was wonderful, making it even better understanding how to explain a whole pose.
Thank you so so much

With Love

Thank you Gabrielle very good information. I've been teaching for 28 years land and water aerobic, muscle conditioning and many variations of yoga. I teach a FIT yoga 1 1/2 and Ergonomic yoga 45 minutes so I begin a class by grounding the whole foot, becoming routed to the earth focusing from centre core by connecting to the lower belly with a deep exhalation than focusing on opening the pelvic bones with the transverse abdominal add a 25 % kegal or tightening of the pelic floor. Work all the way up the spin to the crown of the head. I always ask how everyone is doing because each day we have a new body and what we could do yesterday may be different than today. i.e. more flexible or less. my groups love this as it give us a chance to interact, share and laugh helps me as the instructor to provide a class that is geared to specific needs of the participants each class. It is amazing when I do this how a majority of the class often have the same tightness or discomfort (shoulder - neck, lower back - knees and ankles, feet. My classes deal mostly with all ages & healing poses so any modifications are used at wall, with bolsters, straps and partners. Giving every member of the class a feeling of success whether he or she can do a pose to perfection or just the first step. Never compare only celebrate being able.
Thank you for sharing Anne
